This month we interview our Research Analyst, Cormac Molloy, the newest addition to the Velocity team. We sat down (virtually) with Cormac to get to know him a bit better, why he chose a career in Corporate Finance and a bit about what he enjoys doing outside of work.
- What was your background prior to joining Velocity?
I studied Economics at Newcastle University, where I focused my modules towards Finance. Having graduated in July 2020, I first began working with Bluebox Velocity in December that year.
- What were your motivations behind choosing a career in Corporate Finance?
One of the biggest aspects for me is the opportunity to work closely with amazing businesses and management teams. Although only having been at the company for a few months, I’ve already had the opportunity to work directly with the founders of some really exciting companies.
- What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?
Representing GB at the U23 World Rowing Championships, where I won a Silver medal. It was the culmination of years of work – blood, tears, and, given we were racing in 40° Floridian heat, our fair share of sweat!
- What is the best advice you have ever received?
My rowing coach’s general advice for any given doubts or concerns, was “pull harder”. Whether there was a deeper meaning or not, 9 times out 10 he was right!
- What does a typical day look like for you, and what are you currently working on?
On a typical day, most of my time is spent undertaking research for one of our clients at Velocity, utilising our private market databases to build a picture of the investment landscape in their space. We are currently working with a biopharmaceutical company to scope target acquirers for vertical expansion.
- What do you find most exciting about working for Bluebox Velocity?
The velocity of it! Working with completely different companies each day means you have to think fast and stay on your toes.
- Other than London, what city would you like to live/work in and why?
Definitely Berlin. So much going on and a massively diverse range of people make it the most energetic city I’ve been to.
Rapid Fire:
- If you could only eat one thing for a week straight, what would it be? White Kinder Bueno.
- If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Flight – been stuck in the house too long!
- Summer or Winter? Summer – for barbecue reasons.
- Favourite sport? Rowing to do, Rugby to watch.
